Atomic Coffee took off in 1992. The original Atomic Caf quickly became known for its atmosphere, its music and of course its coffee, freshly roasted on site in a 3kg Swaldo roaster. Within two years demand for their coffee necessitated the purchase of a larger 12kg Probat roaster. This was located at their second Atomic Caf on Balmorals Dominion Road, however roasting within a caf environment presented logistical problems, so by 1995 the shift was made to the current site in Kingslands New North Road coinciding with the purchase of their 1957 Probat 22kg roaster.
They believe in using artisan or hand crafting processes, nurturing the bean on its’ journey from roasting to cup to produce exquisite espresso. They buy only the best, most suitable Arabica beans for their espresso production, and where possible insist on sustainably grown coffee with respect for social responsibility. Their head coffee roaster, Ewan Cameron is a perfectionist, using his years of experience to roast and blend the coffees for which Atomic is so well known.
